We're not about to suggest that a business plan solves all business problems - far from
it. What a plan can do is help managers to identify potential problems (and take corrective action) before they become full-blown disasters.
A business plan is a document that captures a good deal of analysis - analysis of your business, of customers and competition and analysis of the trading environment. A plan anticipates what challenges and opportunities the future may bring, and, importantly, a plan is strategic (by
which we really mean that it clarifies the direction that an organization chooses to take over
the long run).
Strategy not only puts us, as managers, back in control of our businesses, it allows us to make all of those "on-the-run" daily operating decisions more rapidly and with a deal more confidence. Further, most practitioners would argue that the process and mind-set that a business plan inspires may be as important as the document itself.
Managers have a lot to gain from involving appropriately qualified specialists in the preparation of their business plan. Strategic management has evolved into a highly sophisticated discipline, and a number of advanced analytical and modelling tools are available to keep the process on track - tools that you won't find in a planning template. The best plans, however, keep not only the firm's managers, but other major stakeholders (leading customers, key staff) involved as well.
A business plan should be used freely and updated regularly.
